Description
If you are disappointed that your store bought Bee Hotel is not being visited by Blue Banded Bees, that’s because they only nest in sandy/clay soils. Join Keith Upward as he shares his wisdom and skills in this “hands-on” workshop to show parents and children how to make clay bricks suitable for them to nest in.
We will start inside the Blue House to hear Keith share valuable information about these fabulous Solitary Australian Native Bees of which there are over 2000 varieties in Australia. In the past decade vast interest has been shown in these valuable pollinators. This was probably brought about by the innovative “ Bee Hotel”. Arguably the most important of the Solitary Bees is the “Blue Banded Bee” of which there about 14 varieties from the Family “Amegilla” throughout Australia except Tasmania and NT. The Blue Banded Bee is important to Horticulture due to it’s ability to “Buzz” Pollinate, something that European Honey Bees cannot! Plants that are more successfully pollinated due to Buzz Pollination include Eggplants, Potatoes, Tomatoes, Blueberries and Cranberries. Plus much native plants, wildflowers etc.
The bricks will be made outside either in the garden or undercover depending on the weather. This will be a very relaxed atmosphere. Numbers are limited. You are advised to book quickly. There will be an option to leave the bricks at YCG until they are dry to do the holes, or you can take them home to do the holes yourself. You can discuss this with Keith on the day.
The cost is exceptionally low to inspire, educate and build the skills of our valuable citizens of the future. This is a family event and each child should have a parent or caregiver with them to help and learn the process as well. Members $20 and Non-Members $25 includes one adult and one child. Additional siblings can also come for a cost of $10 – this option is now available.
