Permaculture Shines At The Queensland Garden Show

The Queensland Garden Expo celebrated it’s 35 year and YCG was there to showcase what can be achieved with Permaculture. This year was a little different as YCG, Northey Street City Farm and Permaculture Noosa teamed up to develop two of the show gardens in the Giant Kitchen Area. We also shared a stall space signifying that much more can be achieved when we work together in a community of like-minded people. We would like to thank everyone who helped set the gardens up in the lead up to the show and those who volunteered at our stall during the show time. Our organisations would not exist without the generous time given by our volunteers.

 

Congratulations To Our Sister Organisation, Permaculture Noosa on 25 Years

Congratulations to our sister organisation Permaculture Noosa with their 25 year birthday celebration and festival at their Garden at Cooroy. The festival showcased some excellent speakers such as Morag Gamble, Geoff Lawton and Leonie Shannahan, just to mention a few. There were interesting and informative stalls and delicious food making it an excellent family day out.

OPEN TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC ….. SO BRING YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS ALONG!

Come to see for yourself how Mel has achieved a SUPER PRODUCTIVE food garden.

When: Sunday 23rd June 2019

Time: 1-3pm

Entry: $5 YCG Members and general public, ($2 Permaculture Noosa Members)

Where: 1869 Noosa Road, Traveston (near Cooran)

Directions: Travelling from Cooran on the Traveston Road, turn right at the Traveston Village sign into Howe Road, (which passes under the railway line). At the junction with Noosa Road, turn Left…. It is the second property, third driveway on the right.    

Please carpool as there is NO on road parking (all parking on site)

This Open Garden will feature many of the Cool Season Veggies and “successional sowing” covered in Mel’s presentation at the Permaculture Noosa Club Night in February.

Mel and Estelle moved to this 30 acre property 13 years ago, (when Mel had just arrived from the UK).

The Orchard and Veggie areas occupy approximately 4 acres and the hardwood plantation and rainforest plantings a further 6 acres. More than 3 000 trees have been planted so far. The remainder/bulk of the property is given over to grazing for Estelle’s horses.

A wide range of cool season and tropical veggies are grown in both traditional beds and food forest type plantings.

The wide variety of fruit and nut trees now number well over 120 and include citrus that were budded at Mel’s grafting workshop in 2016. There will be many of the 30 plus citrus varieties available for tasting.

The huge amount of mulch required is produced on site comprising hay collected from paddocks or from the extensive plantings of East Indian Lemongrass, grown specifically for this purpose.

Composting and general soil improvement are an ongoing activity on the property.

The land was originally part of a 200 acre Grazing and Fruit Farm which was sub-divided some 30 years ago and overlooks Woondum National Park and is in the upper catchment of Dingo Creek, which is part of the Six Mile/Mary River system.

With the seasonal creeks currently flowing, a walk, after the main tour, through Mel’s developing Rainforest would be a magical experience.

After the tour, join us for tea, coffee and shared delights. Take this opportunity to enjoy the surrounds, ask more questions and socialise with newfound friends.

Permaculture! Sounds familiar… but what exactly is it?

For 25 years Permaculture Noosa members have been creating abundant, sustainable, food producing havens in the Noosa Hinterland and now you’re invited to see, taste and hear their stories.

Permaculture Noosa Festival on Sunday 9 June, 2019 at the Cooroy Community Permaculture Gardens offers fun, food and loads of information and demonstrations appealing to absolute beginners as well long time ‘Permies’.

Permaculture’s philosophy is to work with nature, not against it, harmoniously integrating landscape and people providing their food, energy, shelter and other needs in a sustainable way.

President of Permaculture Noosa, Latha Matters, is excited by the increasing number of young families who are committing to growing their own food and embracing a permaculture lifestyle.

“Families are finding the permaculture principles appeal to their lifestyle and they’re seeking information from our local permaculture pioneers such Geoff Lawton, Morag Gamble, Tom Kendall and others, who are globally recognised permaculture experts.”

Permaculture Noosa’s first Festival really aims to provide something for everyone. Learn about Composting, Bees, Soil Composition, Plant Propagation, Living Classrooms and much more.”

Informative local nurseries, garden suppliers and Permaculture Noosa volunteers, will show you the latest and answer your questions.

Fun, interactive kids’ activities will challenge and entertain all ages.

And if that’s not enough … the appetising and inventive food trucks will create an appreciation for gourmet wholesome food unlike any you’ve tasted before.

Noosa Hinterland’s best kept secret will be revealed at the Cooroy Community Permaculture Gardens, 26 Emerald Street, Cooroy on Sunday 9 June from 10am – 4pm.

Students from the Montessori school learn to make their own edible garden

In April students from the Montessori school came to the Gardens to learn about Permaculture, soils and planting. In the first session they got their hands dirty in the soil looking for soil life like earthworms and bugs. The composting worms were an endless source of fascination for them as they looked into our worm farms trying to spot the composting worms. Making their own compost had them running around finding leaves, sticks and composting material. After their well-earned break they were guided into the wonderful world of seasons, seeds and planting. The school hopes to get their own vegetable patch up and running and we have been invited to come and see their progress in the near future.
