Vetiver Grass (Chrysopogon zizanioides)

Clumping tall grass with thin rigid leaves and deep roots.

Origin: India

Size: 1.5m high, 1.5m spread

Growing conditions: full sun to partial shade

Propagation: root division

Growing tips: Prune back regularly.

Use: Widely used to stabilise erosion, and as a weed barrier. Good chop & drop plant.

Availability in shop: all year, best in summer

Pinto Peanuts (Arachis pintoi)

Spreading ground cover legume with small yellow flowers.

Origin: Brazil

Size: 0.32m high, spreading

Growing conditions: full sun to partial shade

Propagation: root division

Growing tips: Very hardy once established

Use: Good ground cover for orchards, as it displaces grass. Pasture improver. Nitrogen fixer.

Availability in shop: all year, best in summer

West Indian Arrowroot (Maranta arundinacea)

Clumping perennial herb with small white flowers.

Other Names: Maranta, Obedience Plant

Origin: Central and South America

Size: 1m high, 1m spread

Growing conditions: full sun to partial shade

Propagation: plant rhizomes after harvest

Growing tips: Hardy understory plant, prune back to ground when needed.

Use: Rhizomes are used commercially to extract the starchy arrowroot flour. Good chop & drop plant.

Availability in shop: all year, best in summer

False Cardamon (Alpinia nutans)

Very hardy clumping perennial with aromatic leaves.

Other Names: Dwarf Cardamon, Shell Flower

Origin: South-east Asia

Size: 1m high, 1m spread

Growing conditions: full sun to partial shade

Propagation: root division

Growing tips: Prune hard regularly. Does not die back in winter.

Use: Used for Chop & drop and is good for weed barriers or growing in existing root zones, such as around palms. Rhizomes have medicinal properties.

Availability in shop: all year, best in summer

Cats Whiskers (Orthosiphon aristatus)

Perennial native shrub with beautiful white or purple flowers.

Other Names: Java Tea

Origin: India, south-east Asia, Tropical Queensland

Size: 1m high, 1m spread

Growing conditions: full sun to partial shade

Propagation: semi-hardwood cuttings

Growing tips: Prune regularly to keep it compact.

Use: Flowers attract bees. Leaves are used as herbal remedy.

Availability in shop: all year, best in summer
