Popcorn Cassia (Senna didymobotrya)

Hardy legume shrub with yellow flowers, and leaves that smell like popcorn when crushed.

Origin: Africa

Size: 3m high, 2m spread

Growing conditions: full sun to partial shade

Propagation: easily grown from seeds

Growing tips: Prune regularly to maintain compact habit.

Use: Good for permaculture chop & drop. It will fix nitrogen in soil after pruning.

Availability in shop: all year

ARE YOU OUR NEW FOOD WASTE LOOP PROJECT OFFICER?

Are you passionate about sustainability? Are you good at working with people? Do you enjoy problem solving? Delivering projects? Able to work autonomously and are self-motivated? And most importantly do you want to make a positive difference to your community?

Then here’s an exciting opportunity for you! The Yandina Community Gardens (YCG) is looking for a motivated and experienced person for a Project Officer role. YCG has received funding to move our Food Waste Diversion project, Food Waste Loop, into Stage 2 of the project. The Project Officer will work with YCG’s volunteers and management committee lead the Food Waste Loop program into its next stage. You will continue to run the program including collection & processing of the townships food waste alongside our volunteers. This role is for 12 hours/ week (across 2 days) on an 18 month contract.For more information about the Food Waste Loop program, see here.

Required skills / knowledge:

  • Tertiary qualifications and/or experience in environmental science, permaculture or related discipline.
  • Experience in planning, implementing and evaluating community projects.
  • Experience in composting and or worm farming.
  • Experience in community engagement and developing partnerships with stakeholders
  • Excellent communication and networking skills
  • Experience delivering compost education desired but not essential
  • Experience working with volunteers/ working for a volunteer-run organisation preferred but not essential
  • Experience in social enterprise desired but not essential
  • Ability to perform moderate physical work and not shy away from food waste!
  • Must have your own vehicle and willing to collect many buckets of food waste.

Bush Basil (Ocimum gratissimum)

Hardy perennial aromatic shrub that attracts bees.

Other Names: African Basil, Perennial Basil, Clove Basil

Origin: Africa, Madagascar, South Asia

Size: 2m high, 1.5m spread

Growing conditions: full sun to partial shade

Propagation: semi-hardwood cuttings

Growing tips: Bushes flower profusely all year and thrive on regular pruning. Prune half of the bush at a time to keep flowers available to insects.

Use: Flowers attract bees and other insects. Good for permaculture chop and drop. Use sparingly like culinary basil in food.

Availability in shop: all year, best in summer

Vap Ca (Houttuynia cordata)

Herbaceous perennial that grows in soil or partially submerged in water.

Other Names: Fish mint, Chamaeleon plant

Origin: SE Asia

Size: 0.3m high, 0.5m spread

Growing conditions: partial shade to full shade

Harvest: All year round keep pruned to encourage new growth.

Propagation: from soft cuttings or division

Growing tips:  Grow in very damp areas, or place pot in water.

Use: Leaves are used as a green vegetable in salads, stir fries or curry. Has slightly “fishy” smell if crushed.

Availability in shop: all year

Water Celery (Oenanthe javanica)

Perennial herb for boggy to wet conditions. Very easy to grow.

Other Names: Indian pennywort, Japanese parsley, Water dropwort

Origin: East Asia including Australia

Size: 1m high, 2m spread

Growing conditions: full sun to partial shade

Harvest: All year round. Harvest often to encourage bushy growth.

Propagation: by division or cuttings, which root easily in water.

Growing tips:  Grow in very damp areas, or place pot in water.

Use: Leaves, stems and roots have a fresh carrot-like flavour and are edible raw or cooked.

Availability in shop: all year
