Chinese Mugwort

Common Name: Tree Mugwort, Verlot’s Mugwort

Plant: All year round

Harvest: All year round

Propagation: Seeds, cuttings or root division

A member of the “Sunflower family” this hardy, evergreen perennial grows to 1-3m height with a clean, fresh antiseptic-like aroma. It needs a sunny, well-drained spot and can survive through severe dry spells, growing successfully in temperate to tropical climates. Occasional pruning keeps the bush lush, thick and in good condition. Chinese Mugwort flowers very late in Summer (early Autumn) and reproduces mainly by stolons (runners).

This culinary herb was originally used to flavour beer (hence the name) or rub leaves over meat before roasting, add chopped leaves to stuffing and it can be added to flavour rice. Diabetics can take advantage of this herb and use small amounts of finely chopped leaves in salads to assist with digestion.

Mugwort can be grown along fences where animals can reach it as required to assist with internal parasites. There have been reports that growing mugwort besides guava or peach trees can help in deterring fruit fly. You can include mugwort leaves in a mixture of aromatic herbs as a pest-deterrent spray, adding a little soap or vegetable oil to help the liquid to stick to the leaves. Dried leaves can be places in sachets and used in cupboards as a moth deterrent.

A great herb to include in a Smudging Stick.

Dogbane (Coleus caninus)

Perennial ground cover for hot, dry conditions.

Other Names: Scaredy Cat Plant

Origin: East Africa and Southern Asia

Size: 0.3m high, 1.2m spread

Growing conditions: full sun

Propagation: Very hardy. Easy to propagate from cuttings.

Growing tips: Dogbane likes hot, dry and sunny conditions providing a superb display of lavender coloured flowers in Winter and sporadically throughout the year.

Use: Perennial ground cover for under fruit trees. Said to deter cats and dogs.

Availability in shop: all year, best in summer

Chilli

Capsicum annuum, C. chinense, C. pubescens, C. baccatum

Origin: South and Central America

Plant: All year round in warm climates

Harvest: All year round in warm climates

Propagate: Seed

These decorative, short-lived, warm climate perennials are renowned for their fiery fruit which come in a variety of colours: red, yellow, orange, black, purple, green. These plants grow up to 2 metres high with the smaller fruit generally being the hottest but their are many exceptions. The flesh and seeds of the fruit are eaten, with the seeds being the hottest component. Chilli seeds need warmth to germinate and enjoy a hot and sunny position with well drained soil. Regular watering is important avoid excessive application of fertilisers, instead provide a high level of organic matter and be sure to practice crop rotation.

Yacon (Polymnia sonchifolia)

Vigorous perennial daisy grown for its edible tubers. Dies back in winter. 

Other Names: Sweet Root, Peruvian Ground Apple

Origin: South American highlands

Size: 2m high, 1m spread

Growing conditions: full sun

Propagation: Replant corms after harvest

Growing tips: Harvest tubers when all the tops have died down but leave in the ground until at least mid to late winter as the flavour really does improve. Remove tubers carefully as they are brittle.

Use: Tubers are crip and sweet like apple and can be eaten raw. Even with prolonged cooking, yacon stays crisp and it can be used as a substitute for water chestnuts in Asian stir-fries. The main components are fructose and inulin, making it a suitable food for diabetics. It is a good livestock forage crop.

Malabar Chestnut (Pachira aquatica)

Evergreen tree of medium sized tree with edible nuts. 

Other Names: Guyana Chestnut, Provision tree, Saba Nut, Money Tree

Origin: Central America

Size: >10m high, 5-8m spread

Growing conditions: full sun to partial shade

Propagation: readily grown from seed

Growing tips: Durable medium sized tree in orchard or can be kept as potted indoor plant. Takes 4-5 years before able to harvest nuts.

Use: The tightly packed nuts inside enlarge until the pod bursts and fall to the ground. These can be eaten raw or roasted. The raw nuts taste like peanuts and will keep for months in a cool, dry place. Roast nuts with oil and garlic or grind into flour for baking.

Availability in shop: seeds and potted trees in some years (depends on our harvest)
